A coordinator at what is now Blue Ridge Community College noticed a problem: adults were coming to classes without the reading skills they needed. She applied for grant funding to provide tutoring support, and our journey began.
Five dedicated volunteer tutors banded together to form our first Board of Directors, officially creating a brand new nonprofit: Blue Ridge Literacy Council.
We grew with the community, responding to the needs of our growing immigrant community and added English language instruction to help more adults succeed.
Our programs continued to change in response to community needs and expanded to include digital literacy, family literacy, and other educational opportunities.
We reintroduced ourselves as Literacy Connection, but our mission never changed: transforming lives through literacy.
Hurricane Helene destroyed our building and its contents, but thanks to generous supporters, our work continued without pause. Rooted in our mission, and resilient to challenges, we rose above the challenge, together!
