Our Story
Our Story
Back in 1978, a coordinator at what is now Blue Ridge Community College saw a problem. Adults were showing up for classes without the reading skills they needed to succeed.
She applied for grant funding. That’s how our story began.
By 1989, five passionate volunteer tutors formed our first Board of Directors, and a new nonprofit, Blue Ridge Literacy Council, was born.
We’ve grown with the community. In the '90s, we added English language instruction.
In the 2000s, we offered everything from digital literacy to family literacy.
In 2023, we reintroduced ourselves with a new name: Literacy Connection, maintaining the same mission to transform lives through literacy.
When Hurricane Helene swept through our community, our building and all its contents were lost. But thanks to your generosity, our mission never wavered.
