Pamela’s Story: Learning to Say “No”
I’ll never forget the day I went to a nail salon before I knew much English. The stylist asked me questions, and I nodded even though I didn’t understand. I ended up with a full set of services I didn’t want and a much higher bill than I expected. I felt embarrassed and frustrated. That day, I realized how much I needed to learn English so I could speak up for myself.
When I first joined Literacy Connection, even small things felt hard. I have three children, and I didn’t understand English. Going to school meetings, doctor appointments, or running errands was very stressful. With my oldest son, I didn’t go to school meetings because I couldn’t understand anything. My tutor helped me slowly, step by step, and because of her support, with my second child, I was able to go to all the meetings. I feel so happy because I could do that thanks to Literacy Connection.
Now, I can go to the doctor, attend school conferences, and do errands on my own. I laugh now when I think about that nail salon. Now, I know how to say, “No, I don’t want that.”
The biggest change is the freedom I feel. Before, I always ordered the same food at the same restaurants. Now I can go anywhere and order anything. I can take my car for an oil change, buy parts, and do things by myself.
I still have a lot to learn, but every little step I take makes me more confident. Learning English with Literacy Connection has made my life easier and more independent. Now, I can do things for myself that I couldn’t do before. Now I have the freedom to say “no,” and that feels really good.
